Always sympathetic to the plight of "the other", Scot and I work to recreate a scene designed to engender empathy from those of us who are established in our countries to those who are seeking a better life in Canada.
The scene is set at Lester Pearson International Airport in Toronto.
I have been told I will be met by Poochy.
If we had time and ability, we would have edited out our guffaws at the end as I find those embarassing.
Again and again with Video Wednesday we attempt to hold together two equal desires. The first desire is to create an intimate connection with the viewer. The second desire is to maintain the high moral standards we personally hold. On the surface they seem incompatible. Indeed our dinner, movie, stay the night culture would have us unwittingly believe intimacy can be hurried, and voyeuristic consumption can provide the foundation for relational bliss. We are led to believe that the more we show of ourselves and the sooner we show it the better our chances are for legitimate connection.
However, dig a little deeper and you can see that it is the gradual revealing of a person; a scenario where vulnerability is congruent with commitment that ultimately leads to the connections our heart longs for. Beauty is in restraint. The best musicians know its more about the notes you don't play.
In this piece, we show Scot in a vulnerable moment. We walk right up to the threshold of where invitation to intimacy dangerously leans towards voyeurism.
And then we stop. Some things are best left for the honeymoon.
This particular piece is a tribute to childhood influence Uncle Harold. Yes kids, don't let his youthful appearance fool you, Uncle Harold was around even when I was a child. In fact, I remember the first time I heard the "a bungelow" joke. It was funny even before I understood it. Uncle Harold was the first exposure I had to "competitive evangelism" where if you brought your friends you won chips. If you managed to proselytyze them you won a trip to Bahamas.
So far only Lydia has entered our win a date with Scott contest by commenting on his video. Although I suppose by that criteria Paul Stanley has also entered the contest. One more day to either enter the contest yourself our mention it to someone who might enjoy spending time with Portage's most eligible bachelor.
In this piece Scott and I riff on physical and spiritual tensions, occasionally flirting with Wittgensteinian language games. Scott's heart cry for more mass should leave even the most jaded cynic wondering about their own heart's desire.
Straightforward at first, this piece unfolds with considerable complexity.
Can freedom be bought for one without bondage for another?
Is there an agenda behind the gratitude of the peasant girl?
What is behind the nervous giggles of the players?
This is Video Wednesday at its finest. It erodes the defenses of the viewer and shows that vulnerability to be a safer place than was first thought. So safe in fact that we can ask powerful questions of gender, identity, and historiography.
Thank you all for your earnest beseeching of the IT Dept. at Portage Alliance Church. I don't know for sure, but I can probably assume the server crashed handling to volume of email directed to Lydia and Chris urging them to equip me with a computer able to facilitate Video Wednesday.
Since the end of VIDEO WEDNESDAY as a regular feature (usually on Wednesday) here at ATKWAATKM the daily traffic to this blog has shrunk by 2/3.
I stopped doing VIDEO WEDNESDAY because I couldn't get the audio to sync with the video. It was driving me crazy to be unable to achieve the level of quality I felt was necessary to continue delivering the creative goods every single week. I didn't bother to use alternative means to capture video since the beauty of VIDEO WEDNESDAY was the ground breaking effects we managed with only a small web cam. A lot of people assumed we were using professional level equipment and when they found out we were only using what was available to them at home - began making videos of their own!
There are rumors I may be receiving a new computer at work. Should this happen. And should this computer have the required technology to actually sync video and audio:
VIDEO WEDNESDAY WILL RETURN.
To do your part to advocate for the return of VIDEO WEDNESDAY I urge you to email either:
